Types of prescriptions

Repeat prescription

A repeat prescription refers to the medication that you need to take on a regular basis. A 28 day’s supply of medication is given at a time.

Acute medications

Acute medications have to be authorised by a GP on each occasion they are requested.  They won’t show on your list of current medication.  These might include a cream or tablet that you’re trialling, a controlled drug or a medication that requires close monitoring and is therefore not suitable to be a ‘repeat’.  You need to provide the same 72-hour notice when you request these items.

 On the day prescription

A prescription given to you during an appointment with the Doctor or Nurse will be dispensed immediately. After your appointment, take the prescription to the dispensary reception and take a seat whilst your medication is prepared.  If we don’t have the medication in stock, it’ll be ordered and in most cases it’ll be available for you to collect the next day.

What’s the cost?

Prescriptions in Wales are free for all.   Private prescriptions are dealt with as part of non-NHS work and a fee is payable.

Medicines waste

Millions of pounds worth of medicines are wasted each year. Please only order the medication that you need.  If you have stopped taking any medications, please be honest and let us know.  If you have unused medicines at home, you can return them to the dispensary for safe disposal.
